CPExpert Product Update 2001-2
This product update forwards updates to both software and documentation. The software
update is Release 11.2 of CPExpert. The release number indicates that it is the second
release of 2001.
This release (1) provides support for z/OS Version 1 Release 2 (V1R2), (2) enhances
CPExpert’s reporting by providing support for the SAS Output Distribution System (ODS),
(3) adds optional links in CPExpert reports that link rule output to CPExpert documentation,
(4) enhances the CICS Component, (5) enhances the WLM Component, (6) enhances the
DASD Component, (7) enhances the DB2 Component, (8) provides updated documentation
on CD-ROM, and (9) corrects errors that have been reported.
- z/OS Version 1 Release 2.
Z/OS V1R2 was made Generally Available (GA) by
IBM on October 26, 2001. Since Computer Management Sciences is a Business Partner
with IBM, I normally can provide support for new IBM releases within 30 days of GA of
the new IBM release. IBM has previously made versions of MVS Generally Available
in March and September, and CPExpert releases were available in April and October.
With z/OS V1R2, IBM "slipped" the GA date to October 26th.
All CPExpert components have been updated to provide support for z/OS Version 1
All CPExpert documentation has been updated with references to applicable z/OS
Version 1 Release 2 documents from IBM.
SAS Output Distribution System.
With SAS Release 8, SAS users can use the SAS
Output Delivery System to create output that is formatted in Hypertext Markup Language
(HTML). This output can be browsed with Internet Explorer, with Netscape, or with any
other browser that fully supports the HTML 3.2 tag set.
With CPExpert Release 11.2, CPExpert reports have been enhanced by providing
support for the SAS Output Distribution Facility (ODS). This optional feature allows
CPExpert output to be viewed using a standard web browser. CPExpert implements the
frame feature of SAS ODS, and a Table of Contents is produced to facilitate "easy
point and click" to view CPExpert output areas of interest. This new feature was
suggested by Harald Seifert (HUK-Coburg, Germany).
Link rule output to CPExpert documentation.
The normal output from CPExpert is a series of "rule paragraphs" that identify problems
or potential performance problems. The rule paragraphs are concise, but CPExpert users
can refer to the extensive documentation in the user manuals (either hard copy or CD-ROM)
for a detailed rule description of each performance problem, for alternative solutions,
and for specific references.
If the SAS ODS feature is implemented, CPExpert can optionally create links between
the output and the CPExpert documentation to associate each problem that was
identified with the detailed documentation. Rather than finding the "rule description" in
the hard copy or on CD-ROM, a CPExpert user can simply "click" on the link to view the
documentation in Adobe Acrobat ".pdf" format.
Examples of the above two enhancements (SAS ODS and links) can be seen at
These enhancements have not been made to the SRM Component,
MVS Component, or TSO Component. These components apply only to Compatibility
Mode, which is not supported by IBM after z/OS Version 1 Release 2.
Enhance the CICS Component.
The CICS Component has been enhanced in the following areas:
The CICS Component has been enhanced to provide support for CICS/Transaction
Server for z/OS, Version 2.1. Beginning with CICS/Transaction Server for z/OS, CICS
documentation is contained in the CICS Information Center (InfoCenter). All
documentation references have been updated to reference appropriate sections of the
An option has been added to create summary output showing all rules that were
produced, and to list the CICS regions for which the rules were produced. An option
has been added to create summary output by system, to show all rules that were
produced, and to list the CICS regions for which the rules were produced. These
options are valuable for users who analyze a very large number of CICS regions,
spread across a large number of systems. These new options were suggested by
Paul Gordon (Bank of America).
Analysis has been added to determine whether CICS LSR pools and CICS LSR
subpools were seldom used. This analysis could result in substantial savings of
storage. This analysis was suggested by Paul Gordon (Bank of America).
Enhance the WLM Component.
The WLM Component has been enhanced to provide
analysis of report class periods that were included with z/OS Version 1 Release 2.
Enhance the DASD Component.
The entire DASD Component User Manual has been
revised to make the document easier to use and to correct administrative errors.
Enhance the DB2 Component.
The DB2 Component has been enhanced in the
Support is provided for new group buffer pool variables that have been added to
NeuMICS. These new group buffer pool variables significantly enhance CPExpert’s
ability to analyze DB2 data sharing problems for sites who use NeuMICS to create
their performance data base.
Additional guidance has been added to control the analysis of false lock contention.
Correct errors that have been reported
I've added a new member titled
SOURCE(GENER111) which contains a listing of the errors that were discovered
in CPExpert code for Release 11.1, and an acknowledgment of the user who found
appreciate calls from users reporting problems or simply asking questions.
As I said in the original delivery letter for CPExpert, if errors occur with your
installation, please don't waste your time trying to solve the error. Just give me
a call and I will quickly fix the problem!
I suggest that you use the following steps to install
Create a new PDS titled
Create a new PDS titled
Install CPExpert into the
"prefix.CPEXPERT.V112.SOURCE" using the normal
installation procedures described in the CPExpert Installation
Copy your old
USOURCE members into "prefix.CPEXPERT.V112.USOURCE".
This step should be done so you do not have to recreate all of your unique
parameters. There are no changes to the variables in USOURCE members,
unless you are exercising new options provided with this code.
If you elected to receive updates to CPExpert on diskette, the software is distributed
on the CD-ROM that contains the CPExpert user documentation. I have created a
BAT file for you so that you can easily upload the new software. This file is titled
"UPLOAD.BAT" and will be located in the SOFTWARE directory of the CD-ROM. The
BAT file was created per your instructions (i.e., using SEND, etc.).
I would like to say "Thank you"
to the following individuals. These folks have
discovered errors, proposed new features, or suggested documentation changes since
